Making Your Wedding Timeline ~ Tips & Example Timeline
One of the phrases I hear the most is “I have no idea where to start with my timeline.”
Having a thought-out, organized schedule for the day is probably the most crucial building block when it comes to having a successful wedding day that flows with no setbacks. So, I’ve put together some helpful tips using my experience as a photographer/videographer that will help you as you create your plan for the day!
Following the tips, I’ve included a sample of a tried-and-true timeline. The ceremony starts at 4pm, but you can use the timeline and mold it to fit your day by just shifting the time of ceremony to whatever time yours is planned. I hope this helps!

Wedding Timeline Tips for Brides
1. Start with the big moments first
Begin by mapping out the non-negotiable parts of the day—ceremony start time, reception start/end times, dinner service, speeches, and dances. Once those are anchored, you can fill in the rest.
2. Work backwards from the ceremony
If your ceremony is at 4:00 PM, think about when hair and makeup needs to be done, when you’ll get dressed, when photos will start, etc. This helps you see exactly how early you’ll need to start the day.
3. Pad in extra time
Weddings rarely run exactly on schedule. Add a 10–15 minute cushion between events. This gives you breathing room if something runs late, without throwing off the whole day.
4. Prioritize your photo time
If photos are important to you, plan them when everyone is fresh and available. For example:
• First look couples portraits before the ceremony
• Bridal party photos right after first look
• Family photos immediately after the ceremony or before, depending on your preference
Good planning ensures no rushing, no missing family members, and no stressed smiles.
5. Communicate with your vendors
Your photographer, videographer, planner, DJ/band, and caterer should all have your timeline well in advance. They can help adjust things to work best for their part of the day.
6. Account for travel time
If your wedding involves multiple locations, don’t forget to factor in the time it takes to move everyone—and traffic, parking, or shuttle delays.
7. Remember your getting ready window
Hair and makeup usually take longer than brides expect, especially with multiple bridesmaids. Have your bridal party start early and stagger the schedule so no one is waiting too long.
8. Build in breaks for you
It’s easy to get swept up in the flow and forget to eat, drink water, or take a moment to breathe. Add a few small pauses in your timeline to enjoy the day without rushing.
9. Share the timeline with the bridal party & family
A quick printed or texted schedule helps everyone stay on track and know where they need to be—less “Where’s Uncle Bob?” and more stress-free fun.
10. Expect the unexpected—and roll with it
Even with the perfect timeline, small delays happen. Keep your focus on enjoying the day, not the clock. That’s where great vendors and a good plan make all the difference.
